I studied a Graphic Art degree at Leeds Polytechnic, majoring in printmaking. From there, I was Head hunted by an illustration agency in london and began my career as an illustrator.
I moved to Sydney in 1990 and continued illustrating until I moved to the South Coast of NSW in 2004. I have illustrated over 30 books from medical to astrology, plus many publication articles for Women’s Weekly, Country Looks, New idea, Sydney’s Child and so on. I have won 3 awards for illustration work.
Since moving to the South Coast, I have focused on my career as a visual artist. I am a figurative / landscape painter. I draw on my illustrative background to create narrative paintings and drawings.
My inspiration comes from my surrounds which are beautiful lakes and rolling hills which meet the ocean. My respect for flora and fauna come into play, with a variety of animals and birds appearing randomly in my work. All have a meaning though, a snippet in time, seen on my daily walk or driving into town.
my work features women. This aspect of my work is my personal response to being a woman. Seeing how resilient and strong we have to be in society and the unseen expectations placed upon us frequently through our day. I like to do group photo shoots of women together, women being women with no other distraction, whether it is women celebrating their mind’s / bodies, playing music or having a cup of tea. It seems that we all benefit if we stick together and support each other.
My paintings are made up of many layers and sometimes textures. This is a method I have adopted from when I was a printmaker. I look for light and shadows when plein Air, and I try to use a limited colour palette.
My work is firstly created from my emotional response then I can find myself moving through the window into my other imaginative world. Once there anything can happen! The thought process for placing shadows, fine tuning tonal aspects and jestural marks quite often comes afterwards when I come out of that place, back through the window.
