Karin Cutler
Senses of the real and the abstracted … inspiring abstract works and still life explorations of light and form, Karin aims to express the essence rather than the actual.
Karin is a Sydney based, mixed media painter. Born in Sweden, she is strongly influenced by her Scandinavian background, drawing her to a subdued neutral palette. Karin likes to evoke a sense of calm on the canvas using layering, subtle tone and texture to create curiosity and interest.
‘I embrace imperfections, leaving little hints of earlier layers behind to incite curiosity, adding a sense of age and history. I love to experiment with various non-conventional mediums and tools and also use my hands directly on the canvas.
My abstract paintings are never preconceived, as I like to respond intuitively to what's in front of me with emotion and passion. I view my paintings as meditations, thoughts, or moments in time.
My still life studies are abstracted explorations, embracing imperfections, infused with emotion, expressed in essence rather than the very real. Old, dusty, weathered clay bowls in particular fascinate me as a subject matter. Perhaps it is the imagined stories and secrets gathered from the daily life around them and silently stored over time.
